This volume of Encyclopaedia Islamica is the sixth of a projected 16-volume set, largely consisting of an abridged and edited translation of the Persian D尨irat al-Ma尪rif-i Buzurg-i Islm蘋, one of the most comprehensive sources on Islam and the Muslim world, to which a number of original articles, written specifically for the English edition, have been added. One of the unique features of this work of reference lies in the attention it gives to Shi尪i Islam and its rich and diverse heritage, which makes it complementary to other encyclopaedias. In addition to providing entries on important themes, subjects and personages in Islam generally, it offers the Western reader an opportunity to appreciate the various dimensions of Shi尪i Islam, the Persian contributions to Islamic civilisation, and the spiritual dimensions of the Islamic tradition.
This volume contains biographical articles on a number of major Muslim scholars such as the great philosopher and polymath, Ab贖 Na廜ψ Mu廎仟mmad 硃梭-幛櫻娶櫻莉蘋, as well as the 9th/15th-century Persian philosopher, theologian and gnostic, Jall al-嗨蘋紳 al-Dwan蘋. It also includes historical surveys of important concepts in Islam, such as 餃硃尪滄硃Lit. ‘summons’, ‘mission’ or invitation to Islam. Amongst Shi’i Muslims, it was the invitation to adopt the cause of the Imamat. It also refers more specifically to the hierarchy of… and 餃蘋紳, and of religious groups such as the DruzeA religious community that arose as an offshoot of the Fatimid Ismailis around 408 AH/1017 CE.. In terms of the traditions of Sufism, there are articles on Dr Shuk贖h, 硃梭-嗨硃莽贖梁蘋, Ab贖 al-廎兀san al-Daylam蘋 and Dh贖 al-N贖n al-Mi廜ψ蘋. Persian social and architectural history are discussed in articles such as 餃勳堯梁櫻紳 and the Fahraj Congregational Mosque. The volume also includes entries of considerable importance for the study of Shi尪ism, such as those on Fadak and the Fatimid dynasty, as well as a comprehensive article on 幛櫻廜虹鳥硃, the wife of Imam 尪Al蘋 and daughter of the Prophet Mu廎仟mmad, and as such revered by all Muslims, especially the Shi尪a Muslims.
